Our Work and Programs

SHGC members maintain several ongoing civic projects.  Projects include the care and maintenance of Wallbridge Rose Garden in Taylor Park, Millburn Community Garden, Thomas Edison Greenhouse in West Orange, the window boxes at the Short Hills train station, and more.

Conservation

The Conservation Committee aims to protect and restore the local landscape through education and action.  We educate our members on current conservation issues and promote respect for natural resources and responsibility for environmental stewardship. We work with various local organizations whose programs complement those of the Conservation Committee.

Floral Design

Through workshops, speakers, and flower shows, our Floral Design Committee helps members, regardless of their experience or expertise, learn and appreciate the principles and elements of flower arranging, from the basic to the complex, and inspires creative and decorative floral design.

Garden History & Design

The Garden History & Design Committee uses photography and research, the study of good design practices, and educational programs to promote an appreciation of America's gardens. The committee works with the Smithsonian's Archives of American Gardens to document historic gardens in our area.

Horticulture

Nurturing the knowledge and love of gardening is the foundation of the Horticulture Committee.  Through workshops, speakers, and shows, members learn to propagate, grow, and care for all types of plants.  We participate in flower shows with plant specimens from our gardens as we strive to grow in our horticultural knowledge and expertise.

Photography

Our Photography Committee furthers the study and appreciation of our natural landscape through the camera lens. Through speakers, workshops and shows, the committee promotes the art and science of photography at all skill levels.
